This decline is attributed to the impact of Yemeni operations in support of Gaza, which have targeted the company's ships due to their violation of the ban on access to occupied Palestinian ports and their direct ties with the US Navy.
According to the French news agency AFP, Maersk announced last Wednesday a 45% drop in its net profits for the second quarter, citing "supply chain disruptions due to the Red Sea crisis."
Profits during the second quarter of this year amounted to $833 million, a significant decline compared to the $1.487 billion recorded during the same period last year.
The French agency also reported that "operating profits decreased by 26%."
The Wall Street Journal quoted the company as saying that "changing the course of ships to longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa led to increased fuel consumption and higher operating costs."
The company's CEO was quoted as saying, "Demand in the market has been strong, but the situation in the Red Sea is still deteriorating, leading to continued pressure on supply chains," adding that "these conditions are expected to persist for the remainder of the year."
Maersk, one of the world's largest maritime shipping companies, has been targeted by the Yemeni Armed Forces since the beginning of the operations in support of Gaza. The company is one of the largest transporters of goods to the Zionist entity, violating the ban on access to occupied Palestinian ports. It also carries out logistical support operations for the US Navy through its subsidiary, Maersk Line, in the United States.
