News- Middle East: Bahraini mourners have held a symbolic funeral procession for the late Secretary General of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated in massive Israeli airstrikes targeting southern Beirut in late September.

The participants carried a casket decorated with Hezbollah’s flag and Nasrallah’s pictures on their shoulders, as they marched along streets in Maqabah village, located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the capital Manama, on Friday evening.

The mourners paid homage to the late Hezbollah chief and fallen fighters of the Axis of Resistance and underlined that their path of struggle and resistance must be pursued resolutely.

They also chanted slogans in support of the Palestinian cause and condemned the normalization of diplomatic ties between Manama and the Tel Aviv regime.

A similar symbolic funeral procession for the late Hezbollah leader and former head of the Lebanese group’s Executive Council, Sayyed Hashem Safieddine, was held in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriya on Friday.

Video footage circulated on social media platforms showed a large number of people in attendance.

Beirut is set to host a massive funeral for the assassinated leaders of Hezbollah, with delegations from 78 countries expected to attend the event. 

The committee overseeing the procession announced on Friday that the official funeral program will begin at 1:00 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) on Sunday, and will consist of seven segments. 

The committee stated that it is prepared to welcome a massive gathering and to hold a grand funeral ceremony for Nasrallah and Safieddine.

Nasrallah was assassinated in Israel’s bombardment of southern Beirut on September 27, 2024. Using 85 tons of explosives, Israeli jets leveled six residential buildings in Dahiyeh, following a week-long bombing campaign that hit many areas from southern Lebanon to Beirut.

Safieddine was assassinated in an Israeli attack on October 3, 2024.

Hezbollah postponed funeral ceremonies for both leaders due to fears of Israeli attacks on the ceremony.
