Foreign Ministry Holds US Responsible for Oil Spill at Ras Issa Port

News- Yemen: Yemeni Foreign Minister Jamal Amer confirmed that the recent oil spill in the Red Sea was caused by a US airstrike targeting Ras Issa Port, holding Washington fully accountable for all resulting consequences.

In a letter addressed to the President of the UN General Assembly, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary-General, the head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the Executive Director of UNDP, the minister described the strike as a war crime.

The letter stated that the US attack had completely destroyed Ras Issa’s civilian infrastructure, triggering a major environmental disaster by spilling large quantities of oil derivatives into Yemen’s territorial waters and surrounding areas in the Red Sea.

The minister warned that the spill threatens fragile marine ecosystems, coral reefs, fish breeding grounds, and the region’s unique biodiversity. It also endangers the livelihoods of thousands who depend on the sea, particularly those in the fishing sector.

He held the US fully and internationally responsible for this war crime and its catastrophic consequences, calling it a blatant violation of Yemeni sovereignty, the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, and international environmental law.

The letter urged the UN, Security Council, IMO, and UNDP to take swift and decisive action—first and foremost by condemning the US attack—and to conduct a thorough assessment of the environmental and economic damages.

Concluding the letter, Minister Amer emphasized Yemen’s call for a unified, effective international response, warning that failure to address US violations threatens global legal frameworks, regional and international peace, and causes irreversible harm to shared marine environments.

The US aggression has carried out multiple strikes on Ras Issa Port in Hodeidah, killing and injuring around 250 people, including workers, medics, and civilians.

The attacks sparked widespread condemnation and are part of a broader American campaign launched on March 15, 2025, in response to Yemen’s support for Gaza. Since then, US airstrikes have repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure, worsening Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. While Washington cites maritime security, Yemeni authorities insist their operations only target Israeli-linked ships.
