In a statement, the ministry denounced the latest US airstrikes that targeted a United Nations-supervised shelter housing African migrants in Sa’adah Governorate, which resulted in the death and injury of more than 200 migrants.
The ministry described the attack as a cowardly act that violates all divine laws, international conventions, and moral and humanitarian principles. It added that this crime only deepens the United States’ dark record of targeting civilians under false and misleading pretexts.
The statement further noted that this was not the first such crime. US forces had previously committed similar atrocities in the capital Sana’a and the governorates of Hodeidah and Sa’adah, resulting in more than 1,313 civilian casualties and widespread destruction of infrastructure. These acts, the ministry said, constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and international treaties.
The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights affirmed that these and previous crimes amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, requiring urgent international accountability for the perpetrators.
It issued an urgent appeal to the United Nations and the international community to break their silence and take effective action to stop repeated US violations, and to impose political and legal pressure on the US government and its allies to ensure compliance with international law.
The ministry also reiterated Yemen’s legitimate right to defend its land, sovereignty, and citizens, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and international laws guaranteeing every nation’s right to protect its national security and deter aggression. It stressed that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure is a crime that does not expire with time.
US airstrikes targeted a migrant shelter in Sa'adah housing 115 African migrants. The attack resulted in at least 60 deaths and over 65 injuries, with many of the wounded in critical condition.
The destruction of the shelter severely hampered rescue operations, as teams faced difficulties due to the extent of the damage.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of US airstrikes on civilian infrastructure in Yemen, fueling widespread condemnation from local and international human rights organizations. Calls for accountability and an end to the aggression continue to grow.
