Iran Calls for Emergency UNSC Session Over American Attacks on Nuclear Sites

News- Middle East: Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has held the United States and the Israeli regime responsible for Sunday’s attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, urging the UN Council (UNSC) to hold an emergency session to address the unprovoked aggression.

In a letter addressed to the UN Security Council on Sunday, Amir Saeid Iravani denounced the attacks as “deliberate and unlawful” aggression targeting peaceful nuclear sites, and said it had been perpetrated by the US “in full coordination” with the Israeli regime.

Drawing “urgent attention” on the part of the UN Security Council members to the matter at hand, the letter warned that such aggression amounts to “serious threat to regional and international peace and security.”

He commented on the nature of the coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv, noting that the duo had carried out the assaults “simultaneously and in a premeditated manner.”

Iravani noted the attacks that had targeted the Islamic Republic’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, were conducted “without any prior provocation,” with US President Donald Trump brazenly taking responsibility for them.

The diplomat clarified that the facilities had been struck, despite having been under uninterrupted supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The attacks targeted uranium enrichment sites in north-central and central Iran in early Sunday.

They came amid false claims by the United States and its allies -- particularly the Israeli regime -- that Iran is “diverting” its peaceful nuclear activities toward military purposes, which have not been substantiated by the IAEA despite most intrusive inspections to date.

Iravani asserted that the aggression violated Article 2 of Paragraph 4 of UN Charter that prohibits the world body’s members from resorting to threats or use of force against fellow members’ territorial integrity or political independence.

The assaults, the ambassador added, also contravened the Statute and Resolutions of the IAEA, as well as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“The Islamic Republic calls for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to examine this unlawful act and to take the necessary measures to condemn it and ensure that those responsible would not go unpunished,” he said.

Only hours after Trump himself claimed responsibility for the airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the first-ever launch of its multi-warhead Kheibar Shekan ballistic missile during the 20th wave of Operation True Promise III against the occupied territories.

Main targets included Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, the regime’s biological research center, and alternative command-and-control sites.

The ongoing Israeli aggression against Iran has claimed the lives of more than 400 Iranians since June 13.
