FM Araghchi Says He Had ‘Very Good’ Meeting With Putin in Moscow

News- Middle East: Iranian foreign minister says he held a very good meeting and detailed talks with the Russian president about the Israeli regime’s ongoing acts of aggression against Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says he held a “very good” meeting and detailed talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday.

The visit came amid the Israeli regime’s ongoing acts of aggression against the Islamic Republic and a day after the US launched attacks on the country’s three nuclear sites.

“Under the current circumstances, it was imperative to hold close consultations with Russia,” Araghchi said following the meeting on Monday.

He added that Iran has good and deep relations with Russia, which is among the leading powers in the world.

During President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Moscow earlier in June, the two sides upgraded their ties to a strategic level and signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement for long-term cooperation, Araghchi said.

The top Iranian diplomat said Tehran and Moscow have had “close” cooperation and supported each other’s positions in all international issues.

“Russia has always played a serious role in Iran's nuclear program. [Iran’s] Bushehr nuclear power plant was constructed by Russia and two more power plants are being designed,” Araghchi said.

He said Russia was also a prime member of the 2015 nuclear agreement – officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – and Iran’s talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran and Moscow are concerned about the consequences of the ongoing developments for the region, the international community and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

He hailed Russia’s “firm” stance toward the Israeli regime’s acts of aggression against Iran, explaining that Moscow is pushing the UN Security Council to take action.

Although the United States is likely to veto any action against Israel, other members of the Security Council should make a common stance against the regime’s acts of aggression, Araghchi said.

He added that the Iranian foreign apparatus has made its utmost efforts to highlight the joint acts of aggression by the Israeli regime and the US in international circles.

The American attacks on Sunday morning followed more than a week of Israeli aggression, which began on June 13 with the assassination of senior military commanders, scientists and ordinary civilians.

Iran has been carrying out retaliatory strikes against the Zionist regime under Operation True Promise III, inflicting heavy blows on the regime and its military and industrial infrastructure across the occupied territories.
