News - Middle East: Hamas has vowed to continue targeting Israeli forces after an ambush laid by its fighters led to the killing of seven troops in southern Gaza in a deadly incident.

The remarks were made by Abu Obeida, the spokesman for its armed wing, Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, on Wednesday.

"Funerals and the corpses of enemy soldiers will become a regular occurrence, God willing, as long as the occupation continues its criminal war against our people," he noted.

According to the Israeli military, the incident took place in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Tuesday after an armored vehicle the troops were traveling was hit by an explosive device.

Effie Defrin, chief spokesman for the Israeli military, said those killed included an officer.

Abu Obeida called the operation an “unparalleled act of bravery and courage."

"Our fighters are presenting exceptional examples of heroism and boldness,” he stated.

"The latest ambushes are living images of history that prove the freedom fighters of our people are among the most courageous and self-sacrificing of the modern era."

The death toll represents the highest single-day loss for Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip since March, when the Israeli regime triggered the collapse of a ceasefire.

Defrin acknowledged the fatalities as deeply painful and said the incident resulting in their deaths had taken place during a “complex” operation that was still under investigation.

The Israeli military has admitted to having suffered a death toll of approximately 879 troops since the onset of the genocide in October 2023.

Resistance groups have, however, cited far higher numbers amid Tel Aviv's widely-reported efforts at imposing a shroud of secrecy over its wartime losses.

Observers remind how Palestinian resistance fighters continue to inflict blows on the occupation army despite Tel Aviv claiming to have "destroyed" Hamas through its brutal military onslaught.
