In a social media post early on Friday, Esmaeil Baghaei said Merz stands on the wrong side of history as someone who supports the genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"Merz persists in entrenching himself even deeper in the wrong side of history by fixing his position as a vehement backer & apologist of a genocidal aggressor," he wrote on X.
Merz said on Monday that Germany's "reason of state" – a state's supreme, and often overriding interest – was to "defend Israel's existence."
The remarks were seen as a reaffirmation of all-out support for the regime’s acts of aggression, from Gaza to Tehran, under the pretext of "self-defense."
Since October 2023, the Israeli regime has killed at least 56,156 Palestinians, the majority of them children and women, in the besieged Palestinian territory.
It has also carried out acts of aggression on Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. And more recently, it carried out fresh aggression against Iran, killing more than 600 people, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and ordinary civilians.
Making specific mention of Iran, the German head of state earlier said he had "no reason to criticize" the war against the Islamic Republic.
Baghaei called it "extremely low for any stateman to disregard, let alone attempt to justify, a blatant act of aggression and gross violations of international law."
By sympathizing with the Israeli regime, its war crimes, and genocide, Merz has overlooked "Nie wieder Krieg (Never again War)," a famous German anti-war slogan that surfaced after World War I, the spokesperson asserted.
According to Baghaei, the German official's patronage for the Zionist entity would not only mark his distancing from the conscience of history but also his disrespect for the collective conscience of the German people.
Referring to Merz's support for the Israeli aggression against Iran, he asserted that the Islamic Republic would not forgive those who stood up for Tel Aviv with regard to its attacks against the Islamic Republic.
Neither would the Islamic Republic condone Berlin providing chemical arms to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who deployed the weapons against Iranians during the 1980s imppsed war.
"History does not forgive easily, and the memory of nations is long."
