Human Rights Director: US-Backed Saudi Crimes in Yemen Mirror Genocide in Gaza

News - Yemen: Firas Najm, Director of the Canadian Defenders for Human Rights, affirmed that the United States has given the green light to the Zionist enemy to commit a “genocidal war” in Gaza, stressing that Washington is “an accomplice in the crimes, injustice, and starvation.” He added that what is happening in Gaza is the result of “the hypocrisy, deceit, and betrayal by Arab and Islamic regimes, particularly the Egyptian regime.”

In a special statement to Al-Masirah, Najm stated that the US has granted Israel the green light from the beginning of the aggression to launch attacks on Gaza and the West Bank. He emphasized that the US provides support to the occupation through weaponry, media backing, United Nations cover, and in every possible sphere.

Criticizing the American stance, he said, “Unfortunately, the US claims to defend human rights and advocate for justice and Palestinian rights, but in reality, it sides with crime, injustice, starvation, and all the scenes of repression we see on our television screens day and night.”

He also referred to what transpired in Yemen during the so-called "Operation Decisive Storm" and the criminal aggression waged by Saudi Arabia—backed by the US—against the Yemeni people for the past ten years. He pointed out that the starvation of children in Yemen was a daily reality seen on television, and that activists at the time had warned that the same crimes would be committed in Palestine and other Arab and Islamic countries. Najm stressed the urgent need for all to stand against this injustice, conspiracy, aggression, and US hegemony.

Addressing Arab regimes, Najm declared “Today, we see the masks of Western and Arab states in the region fall, revealing their true faces—full of hypocrisy, lies, deception, and betrayal of the [Islamic] nation.”

Najm held the Egyptian regime and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi fully responsible for closing the Rafah border crossing, which he described as one of the most vital passages on Gaza’s borders. He argued that had Egypt intervened, it could have sent food using its power and sovereignty. “If Cairo truly had statehood and sovereignty,” he said, “it would have acted from the very beginning to assist Gaza—at the very least by giving the people of Gaza weapons to defend themselves.”

Drawing a stark comparison between international military support for Israel and the denial of arms to Palestinians, he said,
“Israel is supported by almost the entire world—with weapons from Canada, the US, and many other countries—supplying the occupation with advanced weaponry of all types. So why is the oppressed people of Gaza and Palestine—who have been under occupation and siege for 75 years—not deserving of arms?”

Najm also noted that the Zionist entity distorts the truth regarding humanitarian aid and has succeeded in misleading Canadian public opinion by portraying a false sense of relief regarding this “crime.” He pointed to the protests held in Canada—with participation from human rights organizations—as clear evidence of rising awareness among the Canadian public.

The Government Media Office of Gaza has issued a warning regarding an unparalleled humanitarian disaster, indicating that over 100,000 children, among them 40,000 infants, are at risk of life-threatening hunger as a result of the blockade.

The overall death count resulting from starvation and malnutrition has currently reached 122, including 83 children, and it is projected to escalate rapidly as the siege and the closure of crossings persist.

At least 59,733 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and another 144,477 individuals injured in the brutal Israeli onslaught on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
