Germany should consider imposing sanctions on Israel over Gaza humanitarian crisis: Top MP

News- Middle East: A senior German lawmaker has proposed that Berlin should consider imposing sanctions on Israel over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Siemtje Moeller, the deputy leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) parliamentary faction, put forward the suggestion in a letter to SPD lawmakers after her recent trip to the occupied territories with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

Moeller went on to say that the sanctions could involve a partial suspension of weapons exports or the suspension of the EU’s Association Agreement with Israel, which outlines the trading and political relations between the two sides.

She also stressed the importance of exerting pressure to force the Israeli regime to make substantial changes, stating that there should be consequences if improvements are not seen in the near future.

Moeller further suggested that the recognition of a Palestinian state should not be considered a “taboo,” expressing skepticism about Israel's assurances regarding aid to Gaza.

The latest development comes as Western nations have escalated their efforts to exert pressure on Israel, with Britain, Canada, and France indicating their willingness to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

Israel has criticized France, Britain, and Canada, arguing that their decision would be seen as a reward for the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

Israel launched a genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the occupying entity in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of death and devastation against Palestinians.

The Israeli regime has sealed all border crossings, blocking the entry of all aid and worsening the already dire humanitarian conditions in the territory since March 2, when it violated its ceasefire agreement with Hamas

Experts have warned that without immediate action to ease restrictions and ensure access to aid, the humanitarian situation is likely to worsen and deepen the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire.

Israel has rejected calls from the UN, aid agencies, and world leaders to allow more aid trucks into the besieged region to alleviate the crisis.

The regime’s bloody onslaught on Gaza has so far killed at least 60,939 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
