Death Shells: New Report Exposes Civilian Casualties in Al-Durayhimi Bombing

News - Yemen: A rights group launched a detailed human rights report on Sunday titled “Death Shells,” highlighting a brutal bombing crime that targeted a residential neighborhood in Al-Durayhimi district in Hodeidah governorate.

According to Entisaf Organization for Women and Children’s Rights' report, the crime was committed by mercenaries of the US-Saudi Aggression on August 10, 2018, resulting in the death of dozens of civilian martyrs, including women and children.

The report provides a precise account of the circumstances surrounding the aggression and its mercenaries’ crime, relying on the organization’s statistics and interviews conducted with eyewitnesses. It reveals that the bombing directly targeted a densely populated area, with no military objectives justifying the attack.

The “death shells” bombing caused severe damage to homes and property, as well as causing panic and terror among the civilian population. These details are crucial in documenting the nature and brutality of the crime.

Entisaf relied on a legal framework proving that this crime constitutes a blatant violation of international laws and charters, based on international humanitarian law texts and relevant agreements to clarify that targeting civilians and residential areas is considered a war crime.

This legal framework confirms that the crime committed against women and children in Al-Durayhimi cannot go unpunished, calling for urgent measures to hold those responsible accountable.

The “Death Shells” report is part of Entisaf’s ongoing efforts to document crimes and violations suffered by the Yemeni people, especially the most vulnerable groups such as women and children.

By providing precise details, documented statistics, and live testimonies, the report aims to expose the practices of the Saudi-Emirati Aggression and Occupation Coalition and to hold the international community accountable for its legal and moral responsibilities to stop these violations and protect civilians.

The bombing in Al-Durayhimi district occurred during some of the most intense stages of the US-Saudi military campaign in Yemen, which began in March 2015. Hodeidah governorate, home to Yemen’s most important Red Sea port, has been a primary battleground due to its strategic role in importing food, fuel, and humanitarian aid for the entire country.

Al-Durayhimi, located south of Hodeidah city, was under siege for months in 2018 as aggression-backed mercenaries sought to advance toward the city. On August 10, 2018, aggression forces launched artillery and mortar bombardments that struck civilian homes, killing dozens of residents — many of them women and children — and injuring several others.

This attack was part of a broader pattern of indiscriminate strikes documented by human rights organizations, which have repeatedly warned that the aggression’s targeting of populated areas violates international humanitarian law. The United Nations and aid agencies have also criticized the blockade and military operations in Hodeidah for exacerbating Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, which the UN has described as the world’s worst.
