UN Gaza Resolution Imposing ‘Colonial’ Mandate over Palestinians: Experts

UN Gaza Resolution Imposing ‘Colonial’ Mandate over Palestinians: Experts

News- Middle East; The newly approved United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution, according to which a so-called international force will use “all necessary measures to carry out its mandate” in the besieged Gaza Strip, is construed as the latest “colonial” chapter in Palestine’s history, experts say.

The resolution approved on Monday puts US President Donald Trump in control of the blockaded Palestinian territory, with multinational troops in an "International Stabilization Force (ISF)" overseeing his 20-point plan for the future of the territory.

Avi Shlaim, a British-Israeli historian, said the UNSC resolution is a “classic colonial scheme which totally disregards the rights and aspirations of the indigenous people. In this sense, it is comparable to the British Mandate for Palestine.”

“It is putting conditioning on something that is a right: the right to self-determination. It’s turned the upholder of international law, the UN, into a body that undermines that,” Daniel Levy, a British-Israeli analyst and former peace negotiator, told the Middle East Eye (MEE).

Approved by a vote of 13-0 with two abstentions, Resolution 2803 outlined a plan for a so-called Board of Peace to oversee multinational troops, Palestinian technocrats and a local police force for a period of two years.

The resolution has been rejected by Hamas and several other Palestinian resistance groups, but is backed by the Palestinian Authority (PA).

It makes a vague non-committal reference to “Palestinian self-determination and statehood”, if a number of conditions are met.

Russia and China abstained from the vote on the controversial resolution, which was censured by Moscow as “colonial.”

Some Arab states have also opposed the proposal, citing concerns about a yet-to-be-established board temporarily governing the strip and the absence of any transitional role for the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas and Israel agreed last month to a US-brokered Gaza ceasefire, aimed at ending the latter’s two-year-long genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged territory.

The truce took effect on October 10, but Israel has continued to violate it by carrying out airstrikes, incursions, shootings, and arrests.

The deal marks the first phase of Trump’s 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan, with further stages to be negotiated at a later date.

Israel has killed at least 69,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, since it waged the US-backed genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
