Feb. 16 Over 9 Years: 16 Casualties in War Crimes in Yemen

Yemen: On February 16 in the years 2016, 2018, and 2019, the US-Saudi coalition continued its war crimes and acts of genocide through brutal airstrikes and mercenary shelling against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Yemen. The attacks targeted homes, Bedouin camps, food storage facilities, a cement factory, a medical clinic, and a telecommunications network in the provinces of Sa'adah, Sana'a, Hodeidah, Al-Jawf, Amran, and Hajjah.

The attacks resulted in five martyrs and 11 injured, most of whom were women and children, as well as the death of 50 livestock, the displacement of dozens of families, and widespread destruction of infrastructure and service facilities. These assaults further exacerbated humanitarian suffering, disrupted mobility, violated international humanitarian laws, and turned Yemeni celebrations into tragedies.

Below are the key details of these crimes:

2016: A Man and His Wife Martyred, Dozens of Livestock Killed in an Airstrike on Al-Jawf

On February 16, 2016, in the Malfaq area of Bart Al-Murashi district, Al-Jawf, the US-Saudi aggression committed a horrific war crime. A targeted airstrike struck the home of Masoud bin Hadi, killing him and his wife and reducing their home to rubble.

The attack did not stop at taking human lives; it also wiped out over 50 livestock, which were the family's sole source of livelihood. The couple, who belonged to the nomadic Bedouin community, perished along with their animals, leaving behind stories of struggle and resilience that were shattered in an instant.

2016: Two Injured in Airstrike on a Food Warehouse in Hodeidah

On the same day, Saudi-led coalition warplanes targeted a food storage facility on Sixty Street in Al-Hali district, Hodeidah. The attack turned the warehouse into a blaze of fire and smoke, with food supplies scattered amid the destruction. The airstrike injured two civilians and caused extensive damage to nearby shops and homes.

2016: Coalition Airstrikes Destroy a Medical Clinic, Telecom Network in Sa'adah

In Sahar district, Sa'adah, the US-Saudi coalition conducted a direct airstrike on a medical clinic and a telecommunications network, completely destroying both. This act of aggression deprived the local community of healthcare services and severed their means of communication with the outside world.

2016: Three Injured in Saudi Airstrikes on Amran Cement Factory

For the third time in less than a year, the US-Saudi aggression bombed the Amran Cement Factory, a major industrial facility in Amran province. The attack injured three workers and caused significant damage, disrupting production indefinitely.

2018: Two Killed and Two Injured in Coalition Airstrike on Sana'a

In Nihm district, Sana'a, an airstrike on a main road killed two civilians and injured two others. The victims were part of a wedding convoy traveling to finalize a marriage contract.

2018: Saudi Airstrikes Destroy a Civilian Home in Sa'adah

On the same day, an airstrike targeted a residential home in Razih, Sa'adah, leaving it in ruins. The attack terrorized residents and forced families to flee, adding to Yemen’s growing displacement crisis.

2019: A Child Killed, Three Injured in an Airstrike on a Home in Hajjah

In Abs district, Hajjah, a direct airstrike on a civilian home killed a young child and injured three family members, including a woman and two children.

Over the years, February 16 has become a day marked by war crimes and human suffering in Yemen. From bombing homes and food supplies to targeting hospitals and industrial facilities, the US-Saudi coalition has repeatedly violated international humanitarian laws.

Despite these atrocities, the Yemeni people remain resilient, refusing to surrender to aggression. However, the silence of the international community only emboldens the perpetrators.

The question remains: How many more must suffer before the world takes action?
