‘Toughest Test’: Iran Urges Firm UN Action to End Genocide in Gaza, Punish Perpetrators

News- Middle East: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei says the United Nations must urgently put an end to the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Baghaei posted the message on X on Monday, as he arrived in New York as part of an Iranian delegation for the 80th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Baghaei said the genocide in Gaza is the “toughest test” yet of the UN’s institutional integrity and normative credibility.

“If the United Nations is to remain relevant, its members must act with urgency and resolve to end this atrocity and bring those responsible to justice,” the Iranian spokesperson said.

He said the theme of this year’s session, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” marks a milestone for the Assembly at a moment of grave peril.

“The UN’s founding purposes and principles are facing unprecedented threats from militant unilateralism, coercion, contempt for international law, and large-scale impunity for egregious violations of human rights and humanitarian law,” Baghaei said.

Israel began its campaign of genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out the historic Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

In August, the Israeli regime approved the illegal plan to occupy Gaza City in defiance of international criticism.

Israel has so far failed to achieve its declared war objectives of eliminating Hamas and freeing all captives in Gaza.

The regime has killed at least 65,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, so far, according to the health ministry of Gaza.

Famine has also gripped Gaza as Israel prevents the entry of humanitarian aid.
