UNESCO Condemns Killing of Yemeni Journalists but Avoids Naming Zionist Entity

News - Yemen: The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, condemned the killing of Yemeni journalists in the September 10, 2025, airstrikes that struck the headquarters of 26 September and Al-Yemen newspapers in Sana’a. The attacks left dozens of journalists and media workers dead.

In her statement, Azoulay confirmed that UNESCO has so far verified the deaths of nine journalists, including Abdel Aziz al-Sheikh, Abbas al-Deilami, Youssef Shams al-Din al-Bahri, Mohammed al-Omaysi, Abdullah al-Harazi, Murad Halboub al-Faqih, Ali Naji al-Shara’i, Ali Mohammed al-Aqel, and Jamal al-Adhi. She added that investigations are ongoing to confirm the identities of the remaining victims.

However, the statement drew strong criticism as it overlooked the actual toll of the massacre — 31 journalists and media workers, along with a child — and avoided mentioning the Zionist entity, despite the occupation army openly claiming responsibility for the attack.

Azoulay called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation and stressed the need to uphold UN Security Council Resolution 2222 on the protection of journalists. She noted that the Sana’a massacre was the deadliest attack targeting journalists worldwide since the beginning of 2025.

The September 10 strikes on Sana’a came as part of a broader bombing campaign by the Israeli enemy against Yemen. The bombardment targeted media institutions, residential neighborhoods, and civilian infrastructure, leaving widespread destruction and dozens of casualties, including many women and children.
