Yemen Commemorates Civilian Victims of US-Saudi Aggression Airstrikes on Key Dates

Yemen: On this day, December 26th, during the years 2017 and 2018, the US-Saudi aggression deliberately committed war crimes and genocide through its brutal and direct airstrikes on innocent civilians in their markets, homes, and displacement camps in the governorates of Taiz, Hajjah, and Saadah.

These attacks resulted in 58 martyrs and more than 90 wounded, including children and women, as well as the destruction of property, homes, and shops. A number of livestock perished, civilians were terrorized, displaced persons were persecuted, and grief was inflicted on dozens of families who lost their breadwinners. This led to a worsening of living conditions and an increase in waves of displacement, in shocking humanitarian scenes.

According to extensive reports, three specific incidents on December 26 across 2017 and 2018 are highlighted as emblematic of the aggression's toll on civilians.

December 26, 2017 – Taiz Market Strike:
The reports said that an airstrike, attributed to US-Saudi aircraft, hit the popular Al-Shahra market in the Al-Haima area of Taiz governorate. The strike is said to have resulted in 54 fatalities and 85 injuries, with casualties reported to include nine children and five women among the dead, and 20 children and 10 women among the wounded. The attack reportedly caused widespread destruction to shops and food stores. Survivor testimonies described scenes of severe carnage, with dismembered bodies and overwhelming challenges for rescue teams.

December 26, 2017 – Saada Residential Strike:
On the same day in 2017, a separate airstrike is reported to have struck civilian homes in the Bani Mu'in area of Razih district, Saadah governorate. The reports emphasized the attack resulted in several injuries, widespread property damage, and the displacement of dozens of families.

December 26, 2018 – Hajjah Displacement Camp Strike:
A year later, a reported airstrike targeted a displacement shelter in the Al-Soudi village of Hajjah governorate. The strike killed two people and injured four, all reportedly women, and destroyed the makeshift shelter.

The detailed accounts include graphic descriptions of the aftermath and testimonies from survivors and witnesses, who express anguish and question the military necessity of targeting such sites. The narratives consistently frame the incidents as intentional attacks on civilians and part of a pattern of "collective punishment."

The commemorative reports conclude by calling on the United Nations and international courts to take effective action, issue rulings, and pursue the prosecution of those deemed responsible for war crimes.

The US-Saudi aggression, which began a military intervention in Yemen in March 2015, has been accused by human rights organizations of conducting airstrikes that have killed and injured thousands of civilians and damaged vital infrastructure throughout the country.
