Feb. 26 Over 9 Years: Casualties, Home Destruction, Mass Displacement Due to US-Saudi Aggression on Yemen

Yemen: On February 26 in both 2016 and 2019, the US-Saudi aggression continued to commit war crimes, targeting homes, properties, residential neighborhoods, and mosques in Marib and Hodeidah provinces.

The attacks resulted in civilian injuries, the displacement of dozens of families, the destruction of homes, and the worsening of humanitarian conditions. Additionally, they violated the ceasefire agreement in Hodeidah, terrorized women and children, and caused extensive material and psychological damage, exacerbating food shortages and the lack of humanitarian aid.

Key Incidents:

2016: US-Saudi Airstrikes Devastate Homes, Properties, and Farms in Sirwah, Marib

On February 26, 2016, the US-Saudi coalition added another war crime to its record of atrocities against Yemenis. Intense airstrikes targeted homes, farms, properties, and two mosques in Sirwah district, Marib province, causing massive destruction, displacing dozens of families, and worsening their suffering.

As soon as the first airstrike hit, residents fled their homes, carrying their children and whatever they could salvage. Fearful of imminent death, mothers carried their infants while fathers led their families to seek shelter under trees. Many watched helplessly as their homes crumbled before their eyes, unable to do anything to stop the devastation.

2019: Injuries, Displacement, and Destruction in Hodeidah

In another blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the ceasefire agreement, the Saudi-Emirati-American mercenaries carried out an indiscriminate bombardment on the village of Al-Sutur in Zabid district, Hodeidah province, on February 26, 2019.

The attack injured a civilian, destroyed multiple homes, and forced over 30 families to flee, searching for shelter in nearby areas despite the lack of basic necessities such as food and medical aid. The attack caused widespread panic, especially among children and women, who were left traumatized by the horrifying explosions and loss of their homes.

This attack adds to the long list of war crimes committed by the Saudi-led coalition, which continues to violate the ceasefire agreement signed in Stockholm (December 2018). The agreement was meant to protect civilians in Hodeidah, yet constant violations persist.

International human rights organizations have condemned these attacks and called for urgent measures to protect civilians and hold those responsible accountable.

The deliberate targeting of homes and civilian areas is not just a breach of an international agreement, but a grave crime that highlights the world’s moral and legal responsibility to halt these violations before more innocent lives are lost.
