These attacks resulted in 47 martyrs and 73 wounded, including women and children, the killing of livestock, the displacement of dozens of families, and the terrorization of civilians. Survivors faced horrific scenes of charred and dismembered bodies, extensive property damage, and ongoing violations of the ceasefire in Hodeidah. The atrocities are a stain on the international community, the United Nations, and international human rights laws.
Key Incidents:
2016: 73 Killed and Injured in Sana'a
On Saturday, February 27, 2016, the Khalqah Market in Nehm, Sana'a, became the site of a horrific massacre. US-Saudi airstrikes targeted the crowded market, killing 32 people and injuring 41. The strikes destroyed shops, vehicles, and personal properties, leaving behind heart-wrenching scenes of devastation.
2016: Airstrikes on Residential Areas in Sana'a
On the same day, US-Saudi airstrikes targeted the political district in Sana'a, bombing densely populated residential areas and Yemen University. The attacks injured civilians, destroyed homes, and forced families to flee.
2017: Woman Injured in Sa'adah
US-Saudi- forces shelled residential areas in Sa'adah, wounding a woman severely.
2018: 24 Killed and Injured in Sa'adah
A displaced family in Sa'adah, seeking refuge from war, was struck by Saudi airstrikes. Five people were killed, and 19 others, including women and children, were injured. When medics arrived to help, they too were bombed.
February 27 has become a day of mourning in Yemen, marking years of relentless aggression and war crimes. The destruction of civilian areas, targeting of markets, and repeated massacres highlight the urgent need for the international community to intervene and hold perpetrators accountable.
Despite these atrocities, justice remains elusive. Survivors, families of victims, and the Yemeni people continue to suffer, while the world watches in silence.
The question remains: How many more Khalqah Markets must be destroyed before the world takes action?
