Report: USS Truman Withdraws from Red Sea Laden with Defeats and Losses

News - World: A Western report on Tuesday stated that the withdrawal of the American aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman from the region after sustaining heavy blows by the Yemeni Armed Forces is expected to significantly impact future US aircraft carrier deployment policies and may reshape American military presence patterns globally.

The Economist magazine published a lengthy analytical report on the Truman's mission, coinciding with its departure from the Red Sea following a string of serious Yemeni strikes. These included the loss of three F/A-18 fighter jets, a direct collision with a commercial vessel, and a failure in the aircraft arresting gear system—leading to the dismissal of the carrier’s commander and the launch of an internal US Navy investigation.

The report noted that while the Truman was near Egypt’s Port Said in the Mediterranean, it collided with a large commercial ship, causing material damage and forcing it to dock at a US naval base for repairs. This incident led to the dismissal of the ship’s commander—interpreted as a sign of the seriousness with which the US Navy is treating these failures, despite limited official details.

The report also referred to Washington’s claim that in April, an F/A-18 fighter jet and a tow vehicle slipped into the sea during operations in the Red Sea. The pilot narrowly escaped after ejecting seconds before the crash, reportedly as the Truman was maneuvering evasively after a direct strike by Yemeni forces.

Less than a week later, another F/A-18 crashed during a landing attempt due to a failure in the arresting cable system. Both pilots ejected and were rescued by a helicopter.

The magazine highlighted growing concerns over the US Navy’s operational readiness and safety in combat maritime environments. Each F/A-18 costs tens of millions of dollars, while the Truman is valued at approximately $6 billion. These losses are among the largest sustained in a single mission in recent years.

The Truman's crew reportedly endured constant pressure from escalating Yemeni attacks for months, making a comprehensive Pentagon review inevitable. Upon the carrier’s return to its homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, the Navy is expected to launch an in-depth investigation into command decisions, system reliability, and safety protocols.

The report concluded that the Truman’s mission has become a dramatic event exposing systemic flaws in US naval operations, with potential long-term consequences for training, safety procedures, and technology use—possibly accelerating the shift toward unmanned systems to reduce human and material risks in future missions.
