In an interview with Sky News, the Israeli reservist, who took part in fighting in Gaza, said, "We have a territory that we are in, and the commands are: everyone that comes inside needs to die," he said.
"If they're inside, they're dangerous you need to kill them. No matter who it is," the soldier, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
Recounting cases of arbitrary killing of Palestinian civilians, he said, "In one of the houses that we had been in, we had the big territory. This was the closest to the citizens' neighborhood, with people inside. And there's an imaginary line that they tell us all the Gazan people know it, and that they know they are not allowed to pass it."
"But how can they know?"
He added that people who entered these alleged no-go zones were most often shot.
"It was like pretty much everyone that comes into the territory, and it might be like a teenager riding his bicycle," he said of his experience when his unit was stationed in the Netzarim Corridor, an Israeli military zone that separates the northern Gaza Strip from the southern part.
The soldier added that they used to shoot “poor people, civilians that don't really have too many choices."
According to his remarks, the criteria for opening fire on civilians varied based on the commander.
"They might be shot, they might be captured," he said, adding, "It really depends on the day, the mood of the commander."
He recalled an incident in which a man was shot for crossing the "imaginary line", while another man who approached the body was just captured. He noted that the decision was changed again hours later, ordering that everyone in sight who crossed the "imaginary line" was to be shot.
Stressing that this war “needs to be over", the soldier said, "I kind of feel like I took part in something bad, and I need to counter it with something good that I do, by speaking out, because I am very troubled about what I took and still am taking part of, as a soldier and citizen in this country."
Israel launched the campaign of genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023. It has killed at least 57,523 Palestinians there so far, according to the health ministry of Gaza.
