A declaration endorsed by 111 signatories, among them Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Save the Children, and Oxfam, cautioned on Wednesday that “our colleagues and those we serve are wasting away.”
The organizations have urged for an immediate negotiated ceasefire, the opening of all land crossings, and the unrestricted flow of aid through mechanisms led by the United Nations.
In their statement, the humanitarian organizations indicated that warehouses filled with tons of supplies remained untouched just outside the territory, and even within it, as they were obstructed from delivering the goods.
“Palestinians are trapped in a cycle of hope and heartbreak, waiting for assistance and ceasefires, only to wake up to worsening conditions,” the signatories said.
“It is not just physical torment, but psychological. Survival is dangled like a mirage,” they added.
“The humanitarian system cannot run on false promises. Humanitarians cannot operate on shifting timelines or wait for political commitments that fail to deliver access.”
This comes as health authorities in Gaza say at least 15 Palestinians have died of starvation in a single day, bringing the death toll from hunger to 101, including 80 children.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday warned of the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, describing it as a “horror show” marked by mass devastation and starvation.
“We need look no further than the horror show in Gaza – with a level of death and destruction without parallel in recent times,” Guterres told the UN Security Council during a debate on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution.
“Malnourishment is soaring. Starvation is knocking on every door. And now we are seeing the last gasp of a humanitarian system built on humanitarian principles,” he said, adding, “That system is being denied the conditions to function. Denied the space to deliver. Denied the safety to save lives.”
He denounced Israel’s military offensives, stressing that “with Israeli military operations intensifying and new displacement orders issued in Deir el-Balah (in central Gaza Strip), devastation is being layered upon devastation.”
At least 59,106 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and another 142,511 individuals injured in the brutal Israeli onslaught on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the besieged coastal territory.
