Israel Starves Gaza as World Watches in Silence: Palestinian UN Envoy

News- Middle East: The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations has strongly condemned world powers for remaining silent as Israel continues to starve children in Gaza.

Addressing a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Riyad Mansour said the humanitarian catastrophe has been allowed to unfold in Gaza due to the impunity Israel enjoys.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned at a briefing on Wednesday that Gaza is facing a man-made “mass starvation” due to Israel’s aid blockade on the territory.

“Mass starvation,” he said, “means starvation of a large portion of the population.”

Riyad Mansour told the Security Council meeting in New York that what is unfolding in the Palestinian territory was “predictable, premeditated, and planned.”

“It is a criminal and cruel enterprise occurring openly for all to see.”

Mansour warned that as almost everything has been destroyed during Israel’s 21-month-long devastating war on the narrow strip of Palestinian land, "nearly 2 million human beings remain, including 1 million children. They must be saved."

The diplomat recounted the “heart-wrenching messages” coming from Gaza every day: “I am hungry … There is no food for my family. We are dying. Help us."

“What should the Security Council tell them?” he asked. “That the whole world is against this starvation policy, and yet it is worsening? That no one wants to see people in Gaza starving, and yet the world watches on as they die of hunger and thirst?”

In order to save Gaza, Mansour called for the formation of a “coalition of the willing to take every action necessary now to end the genocide."

A coalition, he said, that must act “to uphold international law and save what is left of our humanity under the rubble in Gaza.”

The Palestinian envoy warned that Israel’s genocide in Gaza “will redefine the region and our world for generations to come. And what we do next will determine in what way.”

“Are Palestinian lives not worth saving?" he asked. "Or does Israeli supremacy extend so far as to grant Israel the right of life and death over the Palestinian people as a whole?”

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported 10 new deaths linked to famine and malnutrition during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people starved to death in the besieged territory to 111.
