Local sources reported that a woman was martyred after an explosive remnant of war detonated while she was collecting firewood in a valley in Al-Hali District. The incident underscores the ongoing danger posed by unexploded ordnance in Hodeidah — one of the most heavily contaminated provinces in Yemen.
The Executive Center for Mine Action had previously declared that Sa’adah and Hodeidah are the most heavily contaminated provinces with explosive remnants of war. Since the truce was signed in April 2022, over 300 civilians have been killed as a result of these remnants.
Despite repeated warnings, the United Nations has long delayed the delivery of critical detection tools needed to clear the affected areas. When equipment was finally provided, it was extremely limited and fell far short of the actual needs. These delays have made the UN complicit in the continued tragedies affecting innocent civilians, as the failure to provide adequate resources has hindered effective clearance of the dangerous remnants.
