Human Rights Group: Saudi Torture and Killings of Yemeni Detainees Constitute War Crimes

News - Yemen: The Eye of Humanity Center for Rights and Development has strongly condemned the horrific crime committed by Saudi forces against four Yemeni citizens from Al-Dhaher District in Sa’adah Province, near the Saudi border.

In a statement, the Center revealed that Saudi border guards arbitrarily detained the victims and subjected them to brutal physical and psychological torture. One of the detainees died as a result of the torture, while the remaining three are in critical condition due to the severe injuries they sustained while in custody.

“This crime is not an isolated incident,” the statement asserted, “but part of a systematic pattern of grave violations of international humanitarian law.”

The Center and numerous local and international human rights organizations have documented repeated cases of torture and extrajudicial killings of Yemeni detainees in Saudi prisons—particularly in notorious facilities such as Abu Arish and Khamis Mushait, which are widely known for inhumane treatment, lack of due process, and arbitrary detention.

The Center emphasized that these actions amount to war crimes and represent blatant violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which guarantees the protection of civilians and detainees during armed conflict.

It called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to fulfill its legal, humanitarian, and moral responsibilities by urgently dispatching a fact-finding mission to investigate conditions in Saudi detention centers and to document the reported abuses.

The statement also urged the United Nations, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and other international bodies to condemn these violations, pressure the Saudi regime to immediately cease such practices, and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable.

The Eye of Humanity Center held the Saudi regime entirely responsible for the safety and lives of all Yemeni detainees and warned that continued silence from the international community not only fails to deter such crimes but renders it complicit in perpetuating a culture of impunity and abuse.

Notably, Saudi border forces detained seven Yemeni civilians in less than 48 hours, subjecting them to severe torture that led to one death. These violations are occurring alongside daily Saudi artillery and missile attacks on the border districts of Sa’adah, which continue to inflict civilian casualties and widespread destruction—under the silent watch of the UN mediator.

In recent days, many civilians have been killed and injured in these areas due to indiscriminate Saudi shelling targeting residential zones, deepening the humanitarian toll of the ongoing aggression.
