The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) said in a statement on Tuesday that they had filed a complaint at the ICC calling for the immediate launch of a formal investigation into Israel’s targeted killing of journalists.
It came two days after five Al Jazeera journalists were killed by an Israeli strike in Gaza City, including 28-year-old correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, who had reported on the regime’s genocidal war since it started in October 2023.
The complaint warned that the killing of journalists in Gaza "is the deliberate blinding of humanity’s eyes, the extinguishing of the witnesses who stand between atrocity and oblivion".
“This was a clear-cut criminal act—a war crime and part of a broader genocidal campaign—and it demands a direct, targeted legal response," read the filing.
The lawsuit said Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior military commanders, have orchestrated a systematic campaign against journalists covering the regime’s war crimes against Palestinians.
It said Al-Sharif’s assassination “was not an isolated event but part of an established policy”.
“Attacks on journalists are not incidental but part of a calculated effort to silence independent coverage and conceal broader war crimes,” the complaint said.
Anas Al-Sharif was reporting outside al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, one of the few remaining areas where journalists could still work.
The HRF said its investigators traced the strike “from the moment a drone camera locked onto Al-Sharif’s position to the instant the missile hit”.
It said the journalist's last words, prepared in anticipation of his assassination, still resonate worldwide.
“If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”
Al-Sharif’s words, the HRF said, “will rise again — in the courtroom of the ICC, in the ink of arrest warrants, and in the unyielding memory of history”.
The case highlights a disturbing pattern of fatal strikes against journalists by Israel.
The Israeli military, which admitted the strike against Al Jazeera staff was deliberate, has accused the victims of being “terrorists in press vests.”
This same accusation has been used to justify the killing of over 220 journalists in Gaza, a tactic the complaint called “not a footnote to the story but the method by which every other war crime is hidden from the world”.
“To ignore this is not neutrality — it is complicity, it is to give the perpetrators the silence they seek," read the lawsuit.
