Amid Gaza Starvation, Former Palestinian Official Urges Western Powers to Stop Netanyahu's Travel

News- Middle East: Xavier Abu Eid, former advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), slammed Western countries, urging them to act against the ongoing famine in Gaza and prevent Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a fugitive from the International Criminal Court (ICC) from accessing their airspace.

Abu Eid's remarks on Wednesday follow a joint statement issued by 27 Western countries and entities, including Britain, France, and the European Union, which condemned the dire situation in Gaza and demanded that Israel allow all international NGO aid shipments into the besieged enclave.

He emphasized that several European countries, including France and Greece, signatories to the statement, have permitted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to travel through their airspace during his trips to the United States, despite the fact that "Netanyahu … is a wanted person by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity."

"Are they going to take the same action now that ... Netanyahu will most probably be going to the United Nations next month? That is a question that they should be asking," Abu Eid asserted.

He further urged other signatories to back their condemnation with tangible measures, such as preventing Israeli weapons from passing through their ports.

"It is very important to remember that when countries issue such a statement, it means that they have all the information to know what is [happening] on the ground," he said, adding that "What we are talking about here is genocide."

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu on November 21, 2024, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts during Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.

All 125 ICC member states, including Britain and France, are obligated to arrest Netanyahu if he enters their territory.

Meanwhile, Mary Robinson, the ex-president of Ireland and the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the US President Donald Trump “must realize that his country is the most complicit in the genocide in Gaza.”

She visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing on Monday as part of a delegation from the Elders group of global leaders, founded by former South African president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela in 2007.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera Arabic, the former Irish president said that “thousands of trucks are being prevented from entering Gaza on unacceptable and illogical pretexts.”

Robinson stated that the situation is one of famine and genocide, emphasizing that “we want to mobilize the efforts of countries around the world to do everything they can to stop the genocide in Gaza.”

Israel launched a genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the occupying Entity in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of death and devastation against Palestinians.

The regime has sealed all border crossings, blocking the entry of all aid and worsening the already dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza since March 2, when it violated its ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

In the past 24 hours, at least eight people, including three children, have starved to death in the besieged territory, bringing the total count of hunger-related deaths to 235, including 106 children, the Gaza Health Ministry reported.

Since the Israeli regime began its genocidal war on Gaza, it has killed at least 61,722 people and wounded 154,525, most of them children and women.
