News - Middle East: Russia’s state-owned company Rosatom says Moscow and Tehran have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the construction of small nuclear power plants in Iran

According to Rosatom, the MoU was signed in Moscow on Wednesday following a meeting between Mohammad Eslami, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), and Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom.

During the meeting, the head of the AEOI and the Rosatom chief discussed the progress of ongoing projects, as well as prospects and promising agendas for cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

The meeting between Eslami and Likhachev was held in an atmosphere of mutual trust, which has been a hallmark of cooperation between Rosatom and the AEOI.

According to IRNA, the AEOI chief arrived in Moscow on September 22 to meet with Russian officials and deliver a speech at events marking Russia’s Global Atomic Week.

The visit also includes tours of contracted factories, meetings with scientific and research institutions, and discussions aimed at strengthening research and educational cooperation.

Under the intergovernmental agreement between the two countries, Russia is to build eight nuclear power plants in Iran, four of them in Bushehr.
