News - Middle East: King Felipe of Spain used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday to call on Israel to “stop the massacre” in Gaza and end its “abhorrent acts” against the Palestinians.

Addressing the Assembly, the monarch said the world “cannot remain silent or look away when confronted with so much devastation, with the bombing – even of hospitals, schools and places of refuge – or with so many deaths among the civilian population, or with the famine and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people – to what end?”

“We cry out, implore, and demand that this massacre stop now,” King Felipe said. However, he notably stopped short of using the term ‘genocide’ during his remarks.

The king further said Spain and other nations were struggling to understand Israel’s actions in Gaza. 

The king also called for immediate humanitarian access to Gaza and the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas.

Spain has already taken a series of measures in response to Israel's campaign of genocide in Gaza, including imposing an arms embargo on the regime.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez admitted earlier this month that Benjamin Netanyahu's regime has been perpetrating genocide against the Palestinians. 

Sánchez condemned “the extermination of a defenseless people” through the bombing of hospitals and the death of children from starvation.

Israel responded by accusing Spain of waging “a continuous anti-Israel and antisemitic attack.”
