‘Mega Deal’ in Works for US Arms Purchases: Ukraine’s President

News- World: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Kiev is negotiating a “mega” arms deal with the United States worth $90 billion, which includes a provision for long-range missiles.

Zelensky made the remarks at a press briefing in Kiev on Sunday, following his recent visit to the US, where he met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“We discussed and agreed on the main points with the president. Now we are moving on to practical implementation,” he said.

Zelensky went on to say that Ukraine had provided a list of specific weapons it intends to buy from the US, adding that his country is also interested in separate agreements for other types of weaponry, including long-range weapons systems, without providing more details.

He also noted that in addition to the major agreement on the purchase of American weapons, Ukraine is also working on a separate deal to supply domestically produced drones to the US.

Zelensky also confirmed that Ukraine had received a Patriot air defense from Israel, which has been operational for a month, indicating that two more systems are expected to arrive from Germany in the near future.

The Ukrainian president further stated that he had shared with Trump “a certain vision of what could be done" to respond to Russia’s actions in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In August, Washington secured $1.5 billion in arms sales to Ukraine through European pledges, just hours before the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska which failed to produce the ceasefire that the US president had sought.

Turkish-hosted ceasefire talks between Moscow and Kiev in July also failed to yield significant progress.

The US and Russia held talks in Saudi Arabia in March this year, agreeing to establish a path to ending the Ukraine conflict, but failed to do so.

While meeting with Russia for a peace deal, Trump announced it would be sending “massive” supplies of weapons to Ukraine.

He also issued a 50-day deadline for a deal to be made, after which he would impose 100 percent tariffs on Russia.
