Khanna, a Democratic congressman for California, urged the US Secretary of State Marco Rubia to formally recognize the state of Palestine.
The petition, led by Khanna, carries 47 signatures of lawmakers and was sent to the US President on September 26.
In a post on X, Khanna gave an update on how his initiative is going, saying, “47 House Democrats supported my letter to recognize a Palestinian state. 30 signed a letter explicitly opposing it.”
“The tide is turning, but we have work to do,” the Indian-origin American lawmaker added.
The petition, first reported by The Guardian last week, urged Rubia to follow the example of European countries and recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.
Currently, the vast majority of the 190+ UN member states officially recognize Palestinian statehood.
The most recent countries to recognize Palestine include states with close ties to Israel, such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and France, which have sought to frame the move as an attempt to preserve the increasingly unlikely idea of a two-state solution.
