New Zealand Facing Backlash for Refusing to Recognize Palestinian State

News - Middle East: Amid growing international momentum for recognizing Palestinian statehood, New Zealand's decision to withhold official recognition has attracted considerable criticism both domestically and globally.

Despite Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's earlier statements, indicating that recognition was a question of “when, not if,” New Zealand has opted to hold back for the time being.

While addressing the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Winston Peters confirmed New Zealand's commitment to a so-called “two-state solution”; however, he did not go as far as to recognize Palestine.

“With a war raging, Hamas remaining the de facto government of Gaza, and no clarity on next steps, too many questions remain about the future state of Palestine for it to be prudent for New Zealand to announce recognition at this time,” Peters stated, expressing concern that premature recognition might hinder ceasefire efforts.

The announcement provoked an immediate backlash.

Opposition parties, human rights organizations, and religious leaders denounced the action.

Clergy members from the Anglican and Catholic denominations organized a protest by chaining themselves to the office of the immigration minister in Auckland.

The independent organization Justice for Palestine condemned the government's position as “a profound lack of leadership,” depicting the nation as unclear about its role on the world stage.

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark said New Zealand was on “the wrong side of history.”

Domestically, the Green Party described the decision as “a stain” on New Zealand's standing as a proponent of peace, whereas the Labour Party referred to it as an “embarrassment.”

“Luxon had a chance to stand up for what is right, but he failed. Recognition of Palestine and sanctions on Israel send a clear message to Israel and the world: New Zealand will not stand by while Israel disregards human life and dignity, and international law,” Labour's Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Peeni Henare, stated.

Recently, tens of thousands marched through central Auckland to demand action. Nevertheless, the coalition led by Luxon has stood by its position.

In an interview with public broadcaster RNZ, Luxon said New Zealand upholds neutrality.

“We are neither pro-Palestine nor pro-Israel; we are friends to both sides, but we advocate for peace,” he said.

As of September 2025, 157 of the 193 member states of the United Nations have acknowledged Palestine. Recent declarations from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have increased pressure on other countries to do the same.
