He said “Our nation remains committed to its national independence and places no hope in the West,” adding that “the snapback mechanism will not bring sanctions harsher than the Trump-era measures we have already faced.”
He reiterated Iran’s firm stance on its nuclear program, emphasizing that any retreat before Western pressure would only embolden adversaries. “If we yield today on the nuclear issue,” Rezaei warned, “tomorrow they will demand the dismantling of our missile program and other defense capabilities.”
Rezaei’s remarks underscore Tehran’s defiance amid renewed Western efforts to reimpose sanctions, as Iran continues to assert its sovereign right to develop peaceful nuclear and defense technologies.
The snapback mechanism is part of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, which allows the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran if the country is found to be in significant non-compliance with the agreement. Although the United States withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 under the Trump administration, the mechanism remains a legal tool under the UN framework, supported by some Western powers to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.
Iran has consistently rejected external pressure to curtail its nuclear activities, arguing that its program is peaceful and sovereign. The country views renewed calls for sanctions and limitations on its missile and defense capabilities as attempts to undermine its strategic autonomy. Over the past years, Tehran has faced multiple rounds of US-led unilateral sanctions, including financial restrictions and trade bans, which it says have strengthened its resolve to maintain its defense and nuclear capabilities.
Rezaei’s recent statements reflect Tehran’s long-standing position that diplomatic pressure and sanction threats will not compel it to abandon its nuclear program, signaling continued resistance to Western-led initiatives and a commitment to advancing its national defense priorities.
