Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the European troika’s move is a result of stubbornness and in line with the implementation of the United States’ orders, rather than being based on a rational calculation.
He added that the trio reinstated sanctions on Iran without taking into account their own interests, concerns and credibility as parties to the 2015 nuclear deal – formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
"In line with the preservation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, we expect countries to refrain from complying with the three European countries’ move, which is considered a form of imposition on the structure of the Security Council,” Baghaei emphasized.
He said the illegal move by the E3 caused a kind of confusion in the Security Council and the United Nations and does not create any obligations for the UN member states.
The Iranian spokesperson slammed the “irresponsible and destructive” approach of the three European countries regarding Tehran’s nuclear issue.
“The three countries have actually misused the so-called snapback mechanism in the JCPOA,” Baghaei pointed out.
Pointing to Europeans’ claim that the window of diplomacy is still open to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, he added that Iran believes, too, that the path of diplomacy is never closed.
"We will use all tools to secure the national interests of our country, and whenever we determine that diplomacy is effective and fruitful, we will not hesitate to use it,” he pointed out.
On September 19, the 15-member UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have prevented the re-imposition of UN sanctions on Iran after the E3 triggered the "snapback" mechanism.
Tehran was accused of failing to comply with the JCPOA.
Iran rejected the "illegitimate" move by the European troika, saying the United States had already pulled out of the JCPOA. Tehran also accused the European trio of siding with illegal sanctions instead of honoring their own commitments.
Iran has 'no plan' to negotiate with Europe
In response to a question about future interaction between Iran and the European troika, Baghaei said, “We currently have no plan for negotiations.”
He explained that Iran’s focus now is to examine the effects and consequences of the move by the three European countries and the United States.
“Whenever we feel that diplomacy can be fruitful, we will definitely make decisions based on the interests and good of the country,” the Iranian spokesman reiterated.
IAEA’s report provides ground for 'E3-US abuse'
Baghaei said the Israeli regime and the US shoulder the main responsibility for the June attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities, but the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provided the ground for their abuse of the nuclear issue.
He expressed hope that the events over the past two to three months serve as a lesson for all relevant parties, including the IAEA officials, to exercise caution in expressing their views.
Back in June, the UN nuclear watchdog approved a resolution, accusing Iran of non-compliance with the agency. The anti-Iran resolution was submitted by the US and the E3.
Israel 'main factor' behind US’s withdrawal from JCPOA
The Iranian spokesman said the US withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 without any justified reason, while the Israeli regime was the main factor behind Washington’s “illegal and discrediting” decision.
He added that Israel sought to present Iran's nuclear program as an international issue, but as verified by the IAEA and its Director General Rafael Grossi, Tehran’s nuclear activities have never deviated from their peaceful purposes.
It has been proven to Iranian officials and the nation that the US is by no means trustworthy and strongly opposes any form of progress, development and independence in Iran, he noted.
“The nuclear issue was one of their many pretexts for exerting pressure on the Iranian people,” he added.
Any abuse of neighbors’ airspace, territorial integrity 'unacceptable'
The spokesperson said that before the beginning of the US-Israel war of aggression, Iran had repeatedly warned that the misuse of the airspace or territorial integrity of the neighboring countries for any action against the Islamic Republic is a “serious and unacceptable” issue.
"The neighboring countries are fully aware that providing third parties any access to [their national] territory for any illegal or aggressive action against Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity constitutes a clear violation of international law,” Baghaei emphasized.
He said Iran undoubtedly reserves the right to show a befitting reaction and will take the necessary action against the threats.
Iran not against US presence in multilateral meetings on sanctions revival
Baghaei said that Iran did not oppose the US presence in multilateral meetings proposed by the IAEA chief on the revival of sanctions against Tehran on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly session in New York, but the other side did not accept it.
He explained that Iran did not object to this proposal and announced its readiness to show its good faith.
However, the opposing parties refused to hold a meeting and provided different excuses, including the one that three European countries could not convince the United States to participate in the meeting, or that the American side had specific considerations, he added.
The Iranian official said this reflected their “own internal divisions.”
He further explained that multiple meetings were later held between Iran and the three European countries and another meeting was also held in the presence of the representative of the EU foreign policy.
