Lebanese Analyst: Western Intelligence Exploits UN Agencies as Tools for Espionage Under Humanitarian Cover

News - Yemen: Lebanese writer and political analyst Ali Murad stated that Western intelligence agencies have long turned humanitarian work into a tool for expanding their influence in sovereign states by recruiting certain UN agency employees for espionage missions. He said this practice is part of the “soft domination system” led by the United States and its allies under the banner of the international community.

Speaking to Almasirah TV, Murad revealed that some UN-linked cells have been involved in espionage activities in favor of the Israeli enemy, describing this as “not an isolated event” but rather a continuation of a global pattern in which international organizations are exploited to serve Western — particularly American — intelligence interests.

He emphasized that the US dominates key decisions and agendas within UN agencies, often turning them into tools for information gathering and implementing covert objectives.

Murad added that while there are numerous documented cases of such operations worldwide, only nations with true sovereignty — such as Yemen — have dared to expose them publicly, while many other countries remain silent out of fear of political or financial repercussions.

“Yemen, as a free and sovereign state, did not hesitate to expose and condemn these violations, unlike other nations that submit to external pressure or international blackmail,” he said.

Murad noted that when non-governmental organizations lose access to countries for intelligence work, American, European, and even Israeli enemy intelligence agencies often resort to UN bodies, since their global presence provides “an ideal cover for security infiltration.”

He cited the Iraq case as one of the most prominent examples, where UN staff were accused of involvement in intelligence activities during the US occupation, leading to a major scandal faced by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Murad also recalled a previous Yemen-related incident, when the UN removed Saudi Arabia from its “List of Shame” over the killing of Yemeni children — a move he said came after pressure from the US and Riyadh, despite the list’s inclusion being backed by evidence provided by Yemen.

He stressed that this demonstrated the UN’s lack of independence and its submission to powerful states, particularly Washington. Murad concluded that Sana’a’s current revelations are both legitimate and necessary, as they protect Yemen’s sovereignty and expose the hypocrisy behind humanitarian slogans used as a “Trojan horse for espionage and subjugation.”

Recently, a major intelligence breakthrough announced by Yemen’s leadership, revealing the dismantling of a sophisticated espionage network operating under the cover of UN-affiliated organizations such as UNICEF and the World Food Programme. According to official statements, the network was linked to American and Israeli intelligence services and equipped with advanced surveillance tools aimed at penetrating Yemen’s communication systems and state institutions.

Yemeni officials described the discovery as a significant security achievement that exposed how certain international organizations had been infiltrated and exploited to conduct hostile operations against the country. The revelations have fueled public outrage and intensified calls for the United Nations to ensure neutrality and transparency within its agencies.
