News - Middle East: Israeli occupation forces have been repressing Palestinian detainees in the Gilad section of Ofer prison, according to a report by the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.

The report, published on Sunday, stated that detainees in this section face daily repression and abuses by Israeli prison authorities, including constant cell raids and tight restrictions on all aspects of their lives. 

A lawyer for the commission said the Gilad section holds 100 to 120 Palestinian detainees across 12 rooms.

The prisoners suffer from severe shortages of clothing and hygiene supplies, with shirts and undergarments replaced only once a week, the lawyer added.

Pants are changed only if torn, forcing many to wear the same trousers for months.

The prisoners at the facility use cold water outside the rooms to bathe, applying dish-washing liquid to clean instead of shampoo or soap.

The prisoners' food is mostly comprised of bread and yogurt, with tuna or sausages provided only once a week. The sleeping conditions are also appalling, with limited space for the prisoners. Each prisoner receives only one blanket and one towel, which are rarely replaced and often unclean.

The Palestinian detainees in the Israeli prison are forced to endure cold temperatures as the windows are left open in the wind and rain. Daily raids and punishments are carried out for trivial or unclear reasons, such as standing near a window or praying in a group.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said Palestinian detainees face isolation, beatings, and electric shocks.

It cited cases in which detainees were sprayed with gas for refusing to address an officer with the Hebrew word for “thank you.”

Prisoners are forced to kneel during roll calls conducted four times daily, it said, adding that Palestinian detainees are prohibited from sleeping after 6 am, or staying awake at night, and are handcuffed, foot-cuffed, and blindfolded during visits, often being forced to walk with heads bowed toward the ground.
