Power Struggle in South Yemen Reveals Emirati-Saudi Contest for Influence Under US–UK Oversight

News - Yemen: Senior Member of Ansarullah’s Political Bureau, Hezam Al-Asad, said that the events unfolding in Hadhramawt and the wider southern and occupied governorates reflect a clear process of power-sharing and resource division among Emirati and Saudi-aligned factions, all operating under direct American and British sponsorship.

Al-Asad stated that developments on the ground confirm that forces labeled as “UAE Brigades,” “Giants Brigades,” “Saudi Brigades,” and “National Shield” are nothing more than mercenary formations driven by a unified agenda focused on looting resources and seizing strategically significant areas.

He explained that the UAE is concentrating its influence along the southwestern coast and in parts of Aden and Shabwah, while Saudi Arabia is pushing to expand into Hadhramawt and Al-Mahrah, attempting to block Abu Dhabi from encroaching on areas Riyadh considers part of its sphere of control.

According to Al-Asad, the presence of American and British personnel in Al-Mahrah, Hadhramawt, and other occupied regions underscores the depth of foreign intervention and the extent to which external powers dominate decision-making there. He added that the deteriorating living conditions, collapsing services, and worsening security situation in southern Yemen reflect the multi-layered nature of the occupation, managed by the US and divided between Saudi Arabia and the UAE according to their interests.

He argued that Riyadh continues its familiar approach of “letting its proxies take the fall,” pushing its local factions to the forefront while portraying itself as a mediator or neutral party, despite being the principal architect of instability.

Al-Asad added that after signing the Roadmap agreement, Saudi Arabia resorted to delaying tactics, citing developments in the Red Sea and Yemen’s support operations for Gaza. He said Riyadh then engineered new tensions in Hadhramawt as a means to evade its commitments.

He stressed that the blood being shed today in Hadhramaut is the result of clashes between Emirati-backed and Saudi-backed militias, describing the situation as a struggle among coalition proxies with no connection to Yemen’s interests, but rather a competition for influence and the redistribution of control among occupation partners.

Al-Asad noted that the long years of war have exposed the emptiness of the coalition’s slogans about defending “legitimacy” or restoring “Hadi,” saying these claims were merely a façade for a deeper aim: seizing territory and wealth, with the US providing military, intelligence, and political cover for both Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.

He added that fragmentation schemes pursued through the National Dialogue Conference, followed by military operations and engineered economic and security collapse, were designed to create conditions enabling Saudi and Emirati domination and to turn populations in occupied areas into expendable tools serving foreign agendas.

Al-Asad concluded that the situation in the occupied south now represents a “fully fledged occupation,” the details of which are becoming clearer by the day. He affirmed that the awareness of the Yemeni people and the steadfastness of the national resistance will ultimately foil foreign plans and restore Hadhramawt—and every occupied inch of Yemen—to full national sovereignty.

Hadhramawt—Yemen’s largest and wealthiest governorate in terms of oil and gas reserves—had remained relatively stable during much of the Saudi-UAE occupation of the southern provinces. However, it remains a central prize for competing powers, most prominently the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) and local tribal formations, all operating within the complex landscape of the coalition of aggression.
