Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said at a news conference that members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observed a series of Israeli airstrikes in their area of operations in south Lebanon on Thursday night.
He added that the Israeli attack coincides with the Lebanese Armed Forces' ongoing efforts to regulate weapons and infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
“These actions are clear violations of Security Council resolution 1701,” the UN spokesman noted.
Dujarric called on the Israeli military to utilise the existing liaison and coordination mechanisms to address these matters.
UN peacekeepers in Lebanon were “approached by six men on three mopeds near the Bint Jbeil area late on Thursday, with one man firing approximately three shots into the back of a UN vehicle,” Dujarric said.
He emphasised that “attacks on peacekeepers are unacceptable and serious violations of Resolution 1701.”
The resolution, which brokered a ceasefire in the 33-day-long war Israel launched against Lebanon in 2006, calls on the occupying Tel Aviv regime to respect Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We remind the Lebanese authorities of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers, and we demand a full and immediate investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Dujarric said.
Israel and Hezbollah struck a ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on November 27, 2024.
Tel Aviv was obligated under the deal to completely withdraw from Lebanese territory. However, it has maintained a military presence at five locations, openly breaching both UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the provisions of the agreement reached last November.
Since the implementation of the ceasefire, Israel has repeatedly breached the agreement with ongoing assaults on Lebanese territory.
Lebanese authorities have cautioned that breaches of the ceasefire by the Israeli regime pose a risk to the nation’s stability.
