Hadhramawt Governor: Chaos in Occupied Areas a Predictable Outcome of Saudi-UAE Rivalry

News - Yemen: Hadhramawt Governor Maj. Gen. Luqman Baras said that the ongoing developments in Yemen’s southern and eastern provinces reflect escalating chaos and intensified power struggles among armed groups backed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Baras described the current clashes and widespread security breakdown in the occupied governorates as an anticipated result of Saudi-Emirati “plots” carried out through local proxy groups.

He stated that the infighting among armed militias in these areas falls within the “reckless interventions” of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, accusing both of openly violating Yemen’s sovereignty as part of their efforts to impose a power-sharing formula aligned with regional and international agendas.

The Governor stressed that the movements of the rival militias are integral to the Saudi-UAE struggle for influence in the south and east—particularly in Hadhramaut, a governorate he described as an economically vital region due to its oil wealth and its strategic position along the Arabian Sea. He added that these factors make Hadhramaut a primary target for foreign powers seeking control.

Baras further stressed that ongoing armed confrontations and destabilizing activities in the occupied areas are part of a broader effort—supported by the US, Britain, and the Israeli enemy, and funded by Saudi Arabia and the UAE—to reshape the situation in Yemen, seize its natural resources, and dominate its ports and strategic maritime routes.

He called on residents of the occupied governorates to maintain social cohesion and protect natural resources, urging the people of Hadhramawt to strengthen unity and national alignment to “expel the Saudi-UAE occupation and its local proxies."

The southern provinces have witnessed growing discontent over the presence of foreign military forces, including Saudi and Emirati troops, as part of the US-Saudi-led coalition that has occupied strategic areas since 2015.
